The first full containership to trade internationally had previously served as a World War II attack transport.

The S.S. Fairland was built as a conventional cargo ship in 1942, served as a World War II attack transport, and was converted to a containership in 1957. In April 1966, it sailed from Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Northern Europe, becoming the first full containership to call at North European ports.

The Fairland could carry 226 35-foot containers using onboard gantry cranes—an early example of the operational changes that would reshape global freight movement.

Today, container shipping is so embedded in global commerce that it can feel invisible, but the systems behind it – container design, cargo handling, documentation, route planning, and cross-border coordination have always mattered.
